Two pedestrians have died after being struck by a vehicle in Scarborough on Friday afternoon, according to Toronto police.
The fatal collision happened near Birchmount Road and Lawrence Avenue East, prompting a major police investigation and road closures in the area.
Victims Pronounced Dead at Scene
Police said the victims were a 64-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman.
Both pedestrians were standing on the northwest sidewalk when they were hit.
They were pronounced dead at the scene.
How the Collision Happened
According to a Toronto police news release, officers were called to the intersection at about 1:50 p.m.
Police said a 79-year-old woman was driving a purple Toyota westbound on Lawrence Avenue East when she ran a red light.
The Toyota then collided with a grey Mitsubishi driven by a 55-year-old woman travelling southbound on Birchmount Road.
Vehicle Hit Pedestrians and Knocked Down Pole
After the collision, police said the Toyota struck the two pedestrians on the sidewalk.
The vehicle also hit and knocked down a pole.
The crash caused significant damage and led to emergency crews responding to the scene.
Injuries Reported in Vehicles
The drivers and passengers from both vehicles were taken to hospital.
Police said their injuries were not life-threatening.
Paramedics said three people were in the vehicle that struck the pedestrians, including two women in their 60s and a six-year-old child.
No Charges Announced
Police have not announced any charges in connection with the crash.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Intersection Closed for Investigation
Toronto police spokesperson Insp. Errol Watson said the intersection would remain closed for a long time while investigators examined the scene.
Drivers were urged to avoid the area and use alternate routes.
Police Ask for Video Footage
Investigators are asking anyone with security camera footage or dashcam video of the collision to contact police.
Such footage may help officers determine exactly what happened before and during the crash.
