Australian footballer Cristian Volpato is facing public scrutiny following two alleged speeding incidents on Sydney’s Anzac Bridge and a disputed roadside drug test result.
The 22-year-old footballer was reportedly stopped twice within just over two hours. During the second incident, police allege he was travelling more than 45km/h above the posted speed limit.
Volpato Allegedly Clocked at 109km/h
NSW Police allege Volpato was driving at 109km/h in a 60km/h zone across the Anzac Bridge at approximately 1am on Friday.
After stopping the vehicle, officers conducted a roadside drug test that allegedly returned a positive result for cocaine. Police then collected a secondary oral fluid sample, which was sent for further laboratory analysis.
Volpato’s international driver’s licence has reportedly been suspended for six months. However, no criminal charges have been filed in connection with the alleged drug test result.
Second Speeding Stop Within Two Hours
The 1am incident was reportedly the second time Volpato had been stopped on the same bridge that night.
Police records indicate that officers first stopped him at around 11pm after he was allegedly detected driving more than 20km/h above the speed limit.
Volpato reportedly returned a negative alcohol breath test during the earlier stop and was issued an infringement notice for speeding.
Just over two hours later, he was stopped again over a substantially higher alleged speed, leading to the roadside drug test and licence suspension.
Footballer Denies Taking Cocaine
Volpato has strongly denied using cocaine or any other illicit substance.
Sources close to the footballer claim he voluntarily completed an independent drug test following the incident. That test reportedly produced a negative result.
Some reports have also suggested that Volpato believes his drink may have been spiked. However, the circumstances surrounding that possibility remain unclear and have not been officially confirmed.
The results of the secondary sample collected by police may take several weeks to become available. Until that analysis is completed, the disputed drug test result remains unresolved.
Allegations Could Affect Volpato’s Football Career
The incidents have emerged shortly after Volpato’s reported breakthrough performances for Australia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the national team reached the Round of 32.
His progress from Sydney youth football to Italy’s Serie A and the international stage had reportedly attracted interest in possible high-profile club transfers.
The allegations may now create reputational concerns for Volpato and could influence interest from potential clubs.
The situation may also attract attention from Football Australia, which operates under the World Anti-Doping Agency’s anti-doping framework. Any sporting consequences would depend on the official test findings and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
