Nearby Boaters Help Pull Occupants From Water

Other boaters in the area responded immediately and helped rescue all five people from the sea.

They managed to pull the occupants from the water shortly before official search and rescue crews reached the location. Their quick action helped prevent the situation from becoming more serious.

All Five Were Wearing Life-Jackets

The Victoria-based Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre confirmed that all five people were wearing life-jackets at the time of the incident.

A spokesperson said there were no injuries, and all five people declined medical assistance after being rescued.

Multiple Rescue Teams Responded

Several rescue resources were sent to the scene after the boat capsized.

The Canadian Coast Guard hovercraft Siyay responded, along with Coast Guard vessels Ganges 1 and Cape Naden. Personnel from Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station 20 also assisted in the response.

Rescue Follows Deadly Richmond Boating Incident

The Saturna Island rescue happened one day after a separate boating tragedy near Richmond.

In that incident, a commercial charter vessel carrying 10 people sank near Roberts Bank. Four people were rescued on Sunday, while six others are presumed to have drowned.

Officials said none of the boaters in the Richmond incident was wearing a life-jacket.

Life-Jackets Remain Critical for Boating Safety

The Saturna Island case highlights the importance of wearing life-jackets while boating. While the vessel capsized and all five occupants entered the water, their use of life-jackets helped keep them safe until help arrived.

The contrast with the Richmond incident also shows how quickly boating emergencies can turn deadly when proper safety equipment is not used.

Five people were rescued near Saturna Island after their boat struck a reef and overturned near Winter Cove on Monday evening. Nearby boaters pulled them from the water before rescue crews arrived, and all five escaped without injury.

The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre confirmed that every occupant was wearing a life-jacket, a detail that likely helped prevent a more serious outcome. The rescue came just one day after a deadly boating incident near Richmond, underscoring the importance of life-jackets and quick emergency response on the water.
