Child Drowns in Southeast Calgary Pond

A child died Sunday afternoon after being pulled from a pond in southeast Calgary, according to Emergency Health Services and the Calgary Fire Department. CityNews Calgary reported the child was a six-year-old girl who drowned in the Legacy community.

Emergency Crews Called to Legacy Pond

Calgary Fire Department Battalion Chief Bruce Barrs said crews were dispatched shortly after 1 p.m. for reports of a person submerged in water near Legacy Main Street S.E.

When firefighters arrived, the child had already been pulled from the pond by a family member.

CPR Started at the Scene

The girl was in critical condition when emergency crews reached the area.

Firefighters immediately began CPR and continued providing assistance after paramedics arrived and took over patient care.

Despite resuscitation efforts, the child was pronounced dead at the scene.

Search Confirms No One Else Was Underwater

Barrs said crews used sonar equipment and completed a surface scan of the pond.

The search confirmed that no one else had been submerged in the water.

STARS Air Ambulance Responded

STARS air ambulance was also called to the scene.

However, the helicopter did not transport a patient.

The drowning in Calgary’s Legacy community ended in tragedy despite the quick actions of a family member, firefighters, paramedics and STARS air ambulance.

Emergency crews performed CPR and searched the pond to ensure no one else was underwater, but the child could not be saved. The incident is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly water emergencies can become fatal.
